Electrical Safety Testing

What is Test and Tag

Test and tag is a process of inspecting and testing electrical equipment to ensure that it is safe to use and complies with the AS/NZS 3760 standards. This process involves a combination of various electrical tests and visual inspections to ensure that the equipment is not damaged, faulty, or unsafe to use.

Test and tag is important for workplace safety and is required by law in Australia. In particular, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations require businesses maintain the safety integrity of all electrical equipment used in the workplace and that is regularly inspected, tested, and tagged by a competent person.

The frequency at which you need to conduct test and tag inspections for electrical equipment depends on a various of factors, including the type of equipment, the environment in which it is used, and its frequency of use.

Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760

As a general rule of thumb, the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760 recommends the following re-test intervals for various types of equipment in a workplace setting:

  • Portable equipment or tools that are not exposed to damage or rough handling: every 12 or 24 months
  • Portable equipment or tools that are exposed to damage or rough handling: every 6 months
  • Fixed equipment that is not part of a switchboard or distribution board: every 5 years
  • Fixed equipment that is part of a switchboard or distribution board: every 12 months

However, it is important to note that these are just guidelines, and it is up to individual employers to determine the appropriate testing intervals based on their specific business needs and circumstances. It is best to consult a qualified professional from Testel to ensure that you are maintaining the relevant safety requirements.
